In December 2024, the Maldives implemented a new departure charge for non-resident passengers, effective December 1st. Economy class passengers are now charged £41, up from £25, and first-class passengers pay £198, up from £74. Private jet customers will pay a cost of £396, up from £99. This fee is intended to fund the construction and development of Velana International Airport, including a new terminal and VIP facilities, which are scheduled to be finished by 2025. To avoid confusion, the fee is included in the price of non-Maldivian flight tickets.
